Lexember 29

Welcome to the Lexember Challenge!

Every year, conlangers can take the opportunity for the month of December to challenge ourselves to add a new word to our conlang’s lexicon.

What word have you coined today? Any cultural or associated worldbuilding notes? Tell us about your inspiration!

  1. Today’s word is a bit of a easter egg type thing. A while back I got the combination yla in the word generator I use, which amused me because it means “to howl” in Swedish (and pronunciation of those graphemes are v close between Swedish and Lǣš-enne). So I wanted to give it a fun meaning.

Through a random inspiration today I have decided that yla now means “to cry, to wail” but it is a verb that is conventionally only used for the cry of human babies, whether soft or intense. Using it on an animal does happen but it’s sort of anthropomorphisizing. Using it about an adult or even an older child would be patronizing to downright degrading.
