The Dailies. October 20, 2021

Did you work on your language today? Create any new rules of grammar or syntax? New progress on a script? New words in your lexicon?

On the other hand, do any excavating or reading or enjoying stuff you’ve already created? Do you have any favorites to share?

How did you conlang today?

  1. So mostly doing a lot of reading and noodling on how systems evolve, and gender can come from person markers, so I took a look at the definiteness markers I noticed in Nar, then went and figured out where definite articles come from and that’s from demonstratives, then went down a deixis rabbit hole.

Now, the one thing I’m sure of when dealing with Nar or Kofnea is that I’m not touching any pre-space language, so their deixis I’m starting off with includes above, below, before, behind, to the left, and to the right, as well as surrounding / beside. Got started on building out a paradigm, though I haven’t gotten anywhere with the actual words yet, just the way they carve up space a bit.

    1. Nice! Deixis is an area (among many!) where I find it hard to be very original, I’m terribly influenced by the languages I know or have at least heard about. All the same, it’s fun!

What do you mean by “pre-space” language in this context?

      1. Ah, so I’m not stopping in on their language at all before the first wave of colony worlds. So they’re already space-going and dragonriders with god-contracts before I hit the very first proto-language I’m looking at, which has a strong effect on how they mentally carve up space.
