The Dailies. November 17

Did you work on your language today? Create any new rules of grammar or syntax? New progress on a script? New words in your lexicon? On the other hand, do any excavating or reading or enjoying stuff you’ve already created? Do you have any favorites to share? How did you conlang today?

The Literary Week – Day 5

Sorry I’m late today, but it’s okay: I’ve got a good one. “He felt that the darkness was full of unimaginable horrors – and the trouble with unimaginable horrors was that they were only too easy to imagine…” ― Terry Pratchett, The Light Fantastic

The Literary Week – Day 4

Hopefully finding these quotes doesn’t turn out to be more fun than translating them. Oh well, today, I bring you: “If you tell the truth you do not need a good memory!” – Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn As with yesterday, I’ll have to come back to this to do my own translation in a comment.

The Literary Week – Days 2 & 3

Woops, I went out of town and forgot about this challenge. So today I figured I’d do two quotes and call it even. We should be returning to the proper schedule after today though. “Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby “People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.” – Harper Lee, To Kill a…

The Literary Week – Day 1

Your challenge today is: “The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don’t.” – Douglas Adams, The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy It was somewhat tricky to translate this into Firen because I don’t have a direct translation of “in much the same way as”, but that’s what makes this fun. I ended up with: Zegůmallabe čattoṙske fante, koṙka nakůserimallaibe. Ze-gů-malla-be čattoṙ-ske fan-te, koṙk-a na-ků-seri-mallai-be ProxPST-CONT-hang[IND]-P3.INAN ship-LPL sky-INE, brick-PL NEG-HAB-same-hang:SBJ-P3.INAN

Literary Week Introduction

Literary Week Introduction

It’s been since August that we haven’t had any challenges here, so I thought maybe I should change that. Thus, I present to you the Literary Week! Every day for the next week, I’ll choose a good quote from a book I like and challenge everyone to translate it into their conlangs.

English Sentence Generation

English Sentence Generation

Today, I’ll describe the inner workings of the English sentence generator I talked about a while ago. (I’m a bit overdue, but I figure better late than never.) (I’m a lot overdue, actually, and left this as a draft for like a month and a half or so, so the other editors may have seen it (I don’t know how WordPress handles permissions on these)) This project leverages most of the features of my word generator, so I would recommend…
